Title: Solution To Child Obesity

Thesis: Dealing with the problem of child obesity I believe we should deal with the marketing and media side of the issue first rather than school, family and neighborhood changes. Since the media reaches so many children throughout the day and it is something that I feel will influence them the most into making a habit out of eating healthy. Instead of food companies and restaurants spending their money on advertising fattening products, they should target those that are healthier and more beneficial to a child’s everyday diet.

  1. The problem of child obesity
    1. How it has come about
    2. Where the problem exists (home, school, environment)
    3. What has been done to solve it thus far
    4. Different solutions and how they have worked/ not worked

  1. Solution: Changing Market and Media
    1. Change the way food is marketed to promote healthy foods as something children want to eat
    2. Change the media for commercials and advertisements to include and promote the purchase of healthy foods rather than junk foods
    3. Why this is the best option and will influence families and their children

  1. Justification
    1. Why solution works better than the rest
    2. Failures of school and home intervention
    3. Best way to reach children in an influential way, the media is a huge part of their lives today and they will easily be benefitted by it

Conclusion: The child obesity problem needs to be solved as soon as possible to keep the younger generations growing into healthy adults. Since the media and marketing businesses influence so many parts of our everyday lives this will be the best way to have children eating healthy.

3/12 In class work

From the title of Jay Caspian Kangs as the reader I assumed his essay was about the issue of immigration and would explain facts about immigrants in sports. By including "the importance of Ichiro" I assumed he would connect immigrants to the love of sports, but I was not sure how he would make this connection.

The main point the author is making is the sport of baseball creates different ethnic supporting groups when you view it from the outside. The players themselves are seen as equals, team players and apart of their own family. But when viewed as a fan, you can see the problems faced by what is said in the stands, and the racism that lingers beneath the pure fun of the sport. Personas in sports are how fans find their favorite players, their race and nationality play a large part in who they may choose as their favorite player. Though this idea may be over-generalized the author points out how he has faulted in his descrimination and knows he should chose a player based from skill-level and overall play.

If I were to write about sports and calling them "American" I would compare it back to the view on baseball as an American sport and whether or not this author agrees with calling it that. Based from all the different nationalities that make up the players of this sport, and all the countries that play this sport, it may not be necessarily fair to refer to it that way. What makes baseball the "American Sport" and how has it come to be our own? This essay can be used to refer to one mans view on how he has been apart and participated in the racism that makes up our American sports. I would point out how the author knows it is wrong to stereotype but finds himself rooting for those of his same ethnicity. It also gives the perspective of the player and the man rooting for the team, which gives an interesting insight. I could also use this essay as a lead in to the issue of immigration and how immigrant players are benefitting our teams, or based on conflicting views not benefitting, our sports teams.

Teens and the internet

This topic is very interesting since it concerns all teens today, the internet has become a huge part of our lives. It is how we communicate, receive information, stay in touch with friends etc. But is it taking over our lives in the wrong way? I am planning on researching the pros and cons of the internet, also how they are affected young teens who are using the internet.

Clean energy and the environment

This topic concerns not only our nation, but the world. It is very important that we keep our planet healthy. Even though it may not affect our everyday lives today, in the long run how we treat our environment can have some very negative effects. By exploring how people view the environment and what we must do to improve it, i think will be a very interesting research topic.

Thousands of dollars missing from SC group

This is the most difficult of my topics to research, since it is local and very recent finding articles on it will be difficult. I find it very interesting to learn about what is happening and how it is affecting the residents of Columbia.
